Twilight Cruise and Toy Drive

NHRA Motorsports Museum, Pomona

Santa Claus in a hot rod? It happens every year at the Wally Parks NHRA Museum in a celebration of the final Cruise Night of the year. One of the largest toy drives in Southern California, the event runs from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., and is hosted by the San Gabriel Valley Car Club, Cal Rods. Approximately 1,200 spectators attend this annual holiday car show that attracts hundreds of pre-1970 hot rods, custom, classic, and muscle cars. There is no cost to enter the show, but attendees are asked to bring an unwrapped gift for a child or teen. Cash donations are also accepted. The final Twilight Cruise Night, as always, will include a host of celebrity judges with the five best vintage vehicles winning a victory lap at the NHRA Winternationals. Remembering Pearl Harbor
Planes of Fame Air Museum, Chino

On Saturday, December 4, the Planes of Fame Air Museum will present a seminar and flight demonstration featuring the A6M5 Zero Fighter, the only original Japanese Zero Fighter still flying! Seminar speakers include Edward Maloney, founder and curator of the Museum; Museum Historian and Photographer, Frank Mormilo, and Historian and Air Show Announcer, Kevin Thompson. The Planes of Fame Air Museum houses approximately 150 historical aircraft, preserved and kept in flying condition by a staff of volunteers dedicated to keeping the history of American aircraft alive for future generations. The Museum is located at 7000 Merrill Avenue in Chino. General Admission is $11, and $4 for students and children 5-11. Children under 5 are admitted free. The Legend of Pancho Barnes and the Happy Bottom Ranch Club


Palm Springs Air Museum

The documentary film about Pancho Barnes will be screened December 8 at the Palm Springs Air Museum. The film entitled "The Legend of Pancho Barnes and the Happy Bottom Ranch Club" documents the life of one of aviation's early female pioneers, Florence "Pancho" Barnes. Four years in the making, the film features the voice of Kathy Bates as the legendary pilot and California native that paved the way for women in the field of aviation. Earning her pilots license from Orville Wright while still in her 20's, Barnes became Hollywood's first female stunt pilot. Barnes then went on to break the world speed record set by Amelia Earhart flying the Travel Air Type R "Mystery Ship" pictured above right. Historical accounts featured in the documentary include interviews with fellow pilots including General Chuck Yeager and Colonel Buzz Aldrin. Tour d'Orange - New Year's Day
Join fellow motoring enthusiasts as they take to the road for the Annual Tour d'Orange. Starting at 9:00 a.m., on New Year's Day, this two hour tour of Orange County's best two roads is the first car event of the year in Southern California. The tour is open to all vehicles. From Model A Fords to F40 Ferraris, approximately 250 cars turn out for the annual drive. Meet at 9:00 a.m. near the corner of Redhill and Fischer in Costa Mesa, and if you sleep in, you can find us eating burgers at In & Out on Jamboree and Barranca at noon. Bring a great ride and a good attitude. There is no need to pre-register and participation is free. You'll even be home before any of the big football games start. The San Diego Automotive Museum's newest exhibit entitled "California Roll" features automobiles unique to the California lifestyle. Pictured above is a VW Bus that best describes the essence of the exhibition. Painted by local artist Nick Battaglia, the Bus is part of a display that includes some classic lowriders and dry lakes racers. Cars and guitars are the subject of a new exhibit at the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum, presented by the Automobile Club of Southern California. Featured in the exhibit are rare photographs, memorabilia and personal cars and guitars from rock icons such as Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Brian Setzer, Jimmie Vaughan, Billy F. Gibbons, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Michael Anthony of Van Halen fame. "Cars and guitars have a great deal in common," says Museum Director Tony Thacker, who is incorporating the 60th Anniversary of the Fender Telecaster guitar in the exhibit. Well Thacker couldn't be more accurate, especially when it comes to Brian Setzer who has a guitar that matches the flames on his hot rod!
